Rube Goldberg has no place in a discussion of hot dog factories.

Hopeful Then, Irked Now

I'm still amazed. When asked during last week's press conference if Harriet Miers was the "most qualified" person he could find, President Bush said, "Yes." Without qualifying it, as he should have, "Well... the most qualified person in the building. Well... in the basement. Well... in the east side of the basement. Well... in her office. Usually."

Because with that simple, unmodified "yes," a logical line of questioning should've followed:

"And the 'most qualified' candidate for the Supreme Court happens to work for you?"
"Yes."

"And the 'most qualified' candidate for the Supreme Court happens to have been working for you for the past decade or so?"
"Yes."

"And the 'most qualified' candidate for the Supreme Court happens to have virtually no professional experience in the field of constitutional law?"
"Yes."

"And the 'most qualified' candidate for the Supreme Court has never actually served as a judge?"
"Yes."

"And the 'most qualified' candidate for the Supreme Court happens to think you're the most brilliant man she's ever met?"
"Yes."


And so forth.

Honestly, I think they both need to get out and meet more people.

I'm happy to see a number of Republicans and conservatives reacting skeptically, and I'd like to see the same from more Democrats. Darn it, though, they're just so... polite.
